Irrigation & Agricultural Productivity
The Welland Canal lies only three kilometres from Pelham’s clay belt. Extending irrigation similar to the Niagara Irrigation Initiative unlocks year-round agricultural productivity.Farmers can supply residents with ripe, local produce even in winter, while selling surplus into the GTA, where higher margins support the business model.
Irrigation networks may extend into urban areas, providing discounted non-potable water for residents. This conserves water-treatment capacity, postponing multi-million-dollar expansions that would otherwise appear on water bills or property taxes.
